Foschini Fashion Design Awards | And Then There Were Six

Foschini Fashion Design Awards

The 6 finalists of the 2014 Foschini Fashion Design Awards have been announced. Congratulations to Sthandiwe Khumalo, Jade Rea, Frances Pauls, Emily Hellens, Sané Bosman and Zandalee Broodryk on creating such unique exhibition outfits.

The 6 finalists were selected by the judges, with the public vote through the Foschini website as well as the stand at Design Indaba, counting a percentage of the total. Votes were for their exhibition outfits, inspired by the theme “From Bauhaus to Boho” and which reflected their unique design style.

The Foschini creative team also directed a fashion shoot with the outfits, using top international models. The designers get to keep these images on disc and can incorporate them in their creative portfolios going forward.

The 6 finalists now have to create a collection of 3 ready-to-wear outfits based on the same theme as their exhibition garment, but this year there’s a twist: they’ve each been given 3 metres of black pleather which they have to incorporate into each garment. The three winners will be selected based on this collection, and announced at the awards ceremony in May.

The Foschini Fashion Design Awards offer the ultimate platform for talented young designers to gain insight into the fashion retail industry.

This includes invaluable experience and exposure to industry professionals, retail fashion design, production and marketing through an internship at Foschini, as well as the opportunity to launch their career through the sale of a limited collection in selected Foschini stores nationwide.

Phase 1: Call-to-Entry
Entrants had to select one completed garment, technical drawings and personal video with which to enter. The selected garments had to reflect their individual design style and creative handwriting.

Phase 2: Semi-Finals
10 Semi-finalists received a “mystery” brief pack with which to create an exhibition outfit reflecting their unique design style. These exhibition outfits featured on Foschini’s dedicated competition website, along with a personal bio on each semi-finalist. In addition, a dedicated Foschini Fashion Design Awards stand at Design Indaba showcased the 10 exhibition outfits and encouraged the public to vote for their favourite, giving semi-finalists further invaluable exposure to the design industry. While the judging panel had the final say in who proceeded to the finals, public voting counted for a certain percentage of the final vote.

Phase 3: Finals
The 6 finalists will receive a detailed brief along with a budget for the final phase of the competition. These garments will be included under the finalists’ profile on Foschini’s dedicated competition website. The garments will also be displayed in a roaming pop-up display that will be exhibited at Foschini Head Office and TFG (The Foschini Group) Design Centre offices to give further exposure to the successful designers.

The three winners will then be announced at the prize-giving event in Cape Town at the end of May

Phase 4: Internship at Foschini
The three winners will be flown to Cape Town and accommodated for the duration of their internship, if not from Cape Town. The internship will include the design of a capsule collection, which will be sold in selected Foschini stores nationwide. Winners will also get exposure to the entire retail production process and spend time with the Foschini Marketing and merchandise departments, ensuring they get exposure to every facet of the industry.

Phase 5: Sale of Capsule Collection
The capsule collection created during the internship will be sold in selected Foschini stores nationwide in October/November 2014.

Further Prizes
Further prizes include a Samsung tablet, cellphone and airtime, a digital sewing machine, as well as a R5000 gift card from Foschini.
