Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town | Day One

StyleSociety Intern, Owethu Mentoor brings us the scoop on the first day of Fashion Week.

As day one of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town kicked off, hordes of celebrities, socialites, fashion editors, fashion bloggers and industry experts flocked to the Cape Town ICC to preview the latest Spring/Summer collections from some of our proudly South African, Fashion Designers.

Inspired designers graced us with simple yet very playful collections as Marianne Fassler’s took us on a journey of color splashes and a new era of tribal prints. Marianne Fassler’s flair for fashion always amazes. She has this talent for taking you somewhere you have never been to before. Her fashion shows and giving you an opportunity to see yourself in any garment that walks the runway.

Lara Klawikowski’s collection was the simplicity of color and elegance with flowing and detailed garments. Her inspiration was a frozen flower and the movement of water in awkwardly shaped materials. Pastels paired with primary colors overcrowded the collection and gave us pure spring.

As we were still floating in a beautiful, detailed forest, Spilt Milk brought us back to an influential haute couture collection with leotards, plaited head fascinators and ball gowns. The collection was impeccably cohesive with shades of white on soft fabrics. A lot of sheer fabrics were used to complement a woman’s body while still making a strong statement.

Reminiscing on the previous collections, we were on the edge of our seats as Stefania Morland took us to Japan, with a collection inspired by geishas. A playful, girly collection, a trend that has been making its waves in international fashion circles: outside lingerie. It is not for the faint-hearted, but as we approach Spring/Summer, I can predict that it will be worn by South Africa’s fashionably elite.
