Kumari Govender, 39, left her project management career to start numerous fashion inspired businesses.

‘A project manager by profession, I enjoyed a successful career as a senior projects estimator. I loved my job, but I always had an entrepreneurial spirit; at 18, I launched a finishing school! Eventually, I left my job to pursue my dream of having a fashion boutique. I dreamt of doing something I love, and I decided to re-ignite that dormant flame.

‘Now, I wear many entrepreneurial hats. I run a fashion blog, StyleSociety, which will soon have an online store. I also have StyleSociety Pop up Boutique, an event that features local fashion and jewellery designers, accessory brands, and bargains, a strategic marketing company that offers clients niche events from store launches to collection previews. I also run a campaign called Fashion For Literacy, through which people and brands can donate educational items to the children at the  Kusasa Project in Franschhoek.

‘Initially, I faced many challenges. I was scared to pursue the unknown and leave salaried employment. I had to figure out how to get my brand to stand out in a crowded marketplace. Running your own business is hard and it takes time. I invested long hours into the businesses, and still do. Also, I had to think about capital. Many entrepreneurs focus on start-up capital and forget about growth capital – which is also so important. I’m really blessed to have had the support of my husband who believed in my vision and supported me throughout my career.

‘I get to do what I love now, and I get to call this work. Every day is exciting! I love that this gives me the chance to be creative on many levels. The possibilities are endless, and I’m especially excited to see fashion moving towards the digital landscape. This gives me so many opportunities that a full-time job never did. I love being in the drivers seat and challenging myself every day. I enjoy the flexibility that comes with being my own boss. I love to set goals and smash them. I also value my freedom. But taking holidays whenever I please has to be my favourite part!’
