Lee Alexander McQueen, the late British fashion visionary and Couturier needs no introduction. A rags to riches story with a tragic ending of a fashion designer who rose from humble beginnings conquered the world of fashion and ended his life at 40.

At just 16 he ditched school and took up a pair of scissors as an apprentice cutter on Savile Row. He later enrolled at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design and received his masters degree in fashion design. In 1994, his entire graduate collection was scooped up by influential fashion stylist Isabella Blow.

McQueen’s sartorial breakthrough was cemented with his “Highland Rape” collection in 1995. He was appointed head designer at Givenchy in 1996, succeeding John Galliano. McQueen stayed with Givenchy until March 2001, a few months after the Gucci Group bought a 51 percent stake in his label – Alexander McQueen, which then saw the brand sore to new heights.

The 40-year-old British fashion designer ended his life just days after the death of his beloved mother, Joyce. His death left an unimaginable void in the world of FASHION

Theatricality was the name of McQueen’s game – from romantic, corseted silhouettes to gobsmacking gowns created from feathers or, say, fresh flowers – but his grand gestures were backed up by incredible attention to detail and tailoring. – Vogue

At one level, he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius – Vogue editor, Alexandra Shulman

Alexander McQueen today is headed by creative director Sarah Burton.

Charged with a task that seemed almost impossible, Burton managed to take over the reins of the famous British label in May 2010, with aplomb.
