PATERNOSTER, West Coast in winter is nature at her most spectacular. Matching nature’s grandeur in every way is Abalone House, Paternoster’s first five-star boutique guesthouse. Crisp, bright days are punctuated by dramatic storms sweeping in off the Atlantic. While moody early mists burn off by late morning to reveal the theatrical beauty of sweeping white beaches, sparkling seas and the unique indigenous flora of the region.
Inspired by the vibrancy of Tretchikoff and the surreal quality of orchids, its 10 magnificent suites are designed around a tranquil central courtyard, and eight of them have sea views. The beds are oversized and extra-length, festooned in monogrammed percale linen. There’s underfloor heating beneath the thick, luxurious carpets as well as in the bathrooms, which also have heated towel rails and wall heaters.

Returning to Abalone House after a day’s sight-seeing in the area feels like a genuine home-coming. For those wanting to cocoon in their suite, there’s an iPod docking station, a flat-screen television, CD and DVD player, and access to an extensive book and DVD library. Keeping warm is easy, thanks to the cappuccino/espresso machine and a well-stocked mini-bar.
For the more sociable, the Africa Bar is the place to be. Warmed by an oversized fireplace, it’s a vibrant space where every tipple imaginable is on offer. French champagnes, the world’s top six single-malt whiskeys and the finest in brandies including a unique selection of cocktails are available.
In the exotically appointed Saffron Restaurant, chef Darren Stewart creates exquisite world cuisine with an African twist. Locally sourced seafood features prominently, alongside traditional South African dishes. A special Chef’s Table in the kitchen caters for up 6 guests who can enjoy dining in situ.
The sun-splashed Orchid Room with its sea view is the setting for breakfasts and afternoon teas. It’s a calm space to relax during the day too – reading, playing board games or gazing out to sea through the antique telescope.
