Essentials Magazine featured my fashion obsessions, secret indulgences, love for art, architecture and more in a full-page ‘ALL ABOUT ME‘ article in the August 2017 issue of the magazine. Get to know me better in this ‘All About Me’ article below.
I have recently updated this post to include my full ‘All About Me’ interview with Essentials Magazine.
ENTREPRENEUR AND FASHIONISTA Kumari Govender ON COURAGE, SECRET INDULGENCES, AND HIGH HEELS
Who had the biggest influence on you when you were younger?
My fashion obsession… was sparked by my mother, who used to make exquisite dresses and wedding gowns and, while growing up, my cupboard was full of bespoke pieces that I’d designed, and my mom made. My dad fostered my love for the arts and encouraged me to express my creativity – thanks to him, I’m never without a sketchbook.
What were you like at school?
Extremely shy, but fearless! And a proud non-conformist – I still am.
What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you ever see yourself in fashion?
I have always had a love for fashion that borders on obsession, but I am equally infatuated with numbers. So I followed my dream and pursued a career in Project Management and Estimating with much success. In 2008, I did a career shift from corrosion engineering to fashion. I like to think that I had the best of both worlds – the whimsy of art and the ability to work with logic. The whole process was instinctual. These traits serve me well today, and I love being a Fashion Entrepreneur.
Walk me through an average day
My days are so intense right now, given the number of wheels in motion. I am often working on a few new projects at the same time. The industry is fastpaced and exciting, so no two days are the same. I find that my productivity peaks between 10 pm and 2 am, where I enjoy better clarity and focus. So I reserve this time for my writing. I’m obviously not a morning person. My day usually starts around 9 am with a strong cup of coffee.
What are some of your favourite places you’ve visited?
I’ve had a lasting attraction to the Rajasthan region. The distinctive alchemy of Art, Travel & Architecture has always been a massive inspiration for me, and I found all three in Jaipur. At the heart of my creativity lies a deep respect for history and Jaipur, being a heritage city seemed to open up this ever-evolving creativeness in me. My favourite places were palaces and forts, especially Amber Fort and Palace. We were also privileged to be invited to have sundowners at Naila Fort, The Private Residence of Mr Oberoi of The Oberoi Group of Hotels.
The trip was spiritually refreshing. We met the most incredible people, had the most stimulating experiences and ended up extending our stay by a few days.
What’s your best kept beauty secret?
Growing up with strong ties to Indian heritage, one distinctive scent and colour is woven through the tapestry of my life – the fine golden-yellow blend of India’s ancient holy powder. Turmeric is the ultimate anti-septic and brings a divine luminescence to my skin.
What’s one item every woman should have in her wardrobe?
I am all about statement heels that scream their presence and are comfortable to boot. (pun intended)
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Take risks and be unique because the universe cannot resist courage and authenticity.
What is your secret indulgence?
Books. I love collecting antique books on art, architecture and history. I also love turning off on weekends, curled up on a couch with my furry kids, a good cup of tea and a soulful book.
What’s your pet hate?
Copycats. They always follow and never take the lead. As imitations of the original, they will always be somewhat inferior versions of the real thing.
What four or five items can’t you live without?
My Journal… Louis Vuitton Agenda for sketching and journaling my inspiration on the go.
My Sunglasses… Come rain or shine, I can’t be without my Celine shades.
