Essentials Magazine – All About Me

Essentials Magazine Kumari Govender

Essentials Magazine’s lovely ‘All About Me‘ feature in the latest August issue out today. Find out about my fashion obsession, secret indulgences, love for art, history, architecture and more…

Here are a few unedited excerpts from my Essentials Magazine Interview below.

Fashion Obsession…
My mom has been my greatest source of inspiration. As a child I would watch her create exquisite dresses and wedding gowns, educating my eye from a very young age. I have always been drawn to design and am enthralled by the whole creative process. As a teenager, my closet was full of bespoke clothing, designed by me and made by mom.

My dad inspired my love for the arts. Art and Technical Drawing were my favourites growing up. I was never without my sketch book. You would always find me sketching designs which allowed me to capture and express my creativity.

Career Moves…
I have a love for fashion that borders on obsession but I am equally infatuated with numbers. So I followed my dream and pursued a career in Project Management and QS/Cost Estimating with much success. Eight years ago I did a career shift from corrosion engineering to fashion. I like to think that I had the best of both worlds – the whimsy of art and the ability to work with logic. The whole process was instinctual. These traits serve me well today and I love being a fashion entrepreneur.

Average Day…
My days are so intense right now given the number of wheels in motion. I am often working on a few projects at the same time. The industry is fast paced and exciting, so no two days are the same. I find that my productivity peaks between 10pm and 2am where I enjoy better clarity and focus. So I reserve this time for my writing. I’m obviously not a morning person. My day usually starts around 9am with a strong cup of coffee.

Favorite Places…
I’ve had a lasting attraction to the Rajasthan region. The distinctive alchemy of Art, Travel & Architecture has always been a huge inspiration for me, and I found all three in Jaipur. At the heart of my creativity lies a deep respect for history and Jaipur being a heritage city seemed to open up this ever-evolving creativeness in me. My favourite places were the palaces and forts, especially Amber Fort and Palace. We were also privileged to be invited to have sundowners at Naila Fort, The Private Residence of Mr. Oberoi of The Oberoi Group of Hotels.

The trip was spiritually refreshing. We met the most incredible people, had the most stimulating experiences and ended up extending our stay by a few days.

Secret Indulgence…
Books. I love collecting antique books, especially on Art, Architecture and History. I love turning off on weekends, curled up on a couch with my furry kids, a good cup of tea and a soulful book.

Pet Hate…
Copycats. They never lead. They always follow. And will remain an inferior version of the original.
